K.H.

A dark tipped projectile ripped through the dark sky. A dull thud sounded as it found its mark, my chest. The pain searing to life as it hit my chest. Then as the worst part of that pain struck, that pain subdued and my mind went black.

I felt the strong rush of being disconnected from virtual reality, a feeling i did not like. My head now pounding, I looked up. I hated seeing the land and sky slip from my grasp, as it only meant one thing, game over. I look around my room, a thin layer of dust had begun to cover every surface from the week neglect on my part.

   "Damn," I muttered
That was the third character i had lost in the past week. I shouldn't have stolen that candle stick, lousy guards, letting me slip in and steal it. I smirked at the last comment, while not being very amusing, it was still funny because of its stupidity. Thinking over the last few days in the VEE (Virtual Enhanced Entertainment), i trudged to my bed. Landing on the rickety springs as i slumped into my bed, i feel into a deep sleep. When i awoke, i turned to the desk clock on my dresser and saw it was 2:30 in the afternoon.

"Ugh," I grumbled as i loosened my stiff joints.
I looked up around the still silent room. I felt an eerie sensation, like the room had died. Maybe i was imagining things, but it still had a weird feel to it, as if it wasn't really my room. I smelled the faint smell of chocolate chip pancakes. Something was wrong... I hadn't smelled chocolate chips since the last day at home.

"Wait!" I screamed in my head
This wasn't my room in the hotel i had been staying at, this was my room in my mom's house back in Silicon Valley, California. I looked around more intently this time to get a closer look. The feeling of the room being off was right. The carpet wasn't the right roughness, and the walls were the wrong color of orange. Living fifteen years in the house, i know every detail of the room i had slept and worked in.

"All right," I said, "good try, but a few details are off!"
The room faded to a cube room with a holographic module on the ceiling. That had been the thing making the "room" appear. I laughed, as i had been right, and looked around for anyone or anything that might give me an idea where i was.

"Are you Kane Haimi?" Said a gruff voice.

"Yes," I replied calmly. I already had a plan.
